Jersey club artist DJ Dru debuted his first-ever EP just in time for the holidays. “The Jersey Club Workout” is the perfect soundtrack to listen to while shedding off your “Quarantine 15” and Thanksgiving meal. Even though it’s only four tracks long, you’ll never get tired of the upbeat tempo when you have it set on repeat.
DJ Dru’s origin story began when his family moved from Jersey City to Essex County at a young age. He had just enrolled into a new middle school when he nabbed DJ Tameil’s “Anthrax” CD from another student. Not a lot of time had gone by before Dru started making his own beats on discarded computers that he restored himself.
Dru shared this momentous backstory in an interview with UNIIQU3 on her Twitch TV show, Club Chronicles. As he reminisced recent memories, Dru went over the details of how “The Jersey Club Workout” EP came to fruition.
So, you know me. I’m sitting here like, ‘aiight…Quarantine.’ Everybody’s locked down. Everybody’s trying to get their workouts in. Aiight, cool. Imma do a workout EP.
It all started when producer Loco G sent over a beat to DJ Dru, sparking an idea for the song, ‘Feel The Burn.’ “While I was on the plane going to Puerto Rico I came across it on my computer and knew it would be a hit,” Dru tells us. “As soon as I got back to the States I rearranged it a bit, added some touches and recorded on it…” Dru would then go on to create three more tracks: ‘Freestyle Workout,’ ‘Cardio Workout,’ and finally ‘Victory’ featuring DJ Lokey, who would later mix and master the whole project.
What’s so special about “The Jersey Club Workout” EP is that Dru freestyle the entire project. He tells us, “I freestyle 90% of my recordings. My first thoughts and vibes are always the best ones [in my opinion].” You might even say the cover art was a freestyle as well given its fun and humorous take, much like the EP itself.
