Devan Moves On in Her New Music Video, ‘Without You’

The first half of the chorus sounds distorted and angry, then the transition into the second half marks that moment of epiphany – the sounds are softer and rounder, the drums are bouncy and dancey, and the lyrics take on a different meaning even though they don’t change.

On July 15, buzzing vocalist Devan dropped her new song and music video ‘Without You‘. ‘Without You’ is the byproduct of a message from an ex-boyfriend. “Five years later, after I had moved on, he conveniently started messaging me saying he loves my music and is ‘so proud’ of me,” Devan says. “It came across as condescending, like he felt he could claim some sort of ownership over what I had accomplished.”

Produced by Jack Emblem and Jesse Gold, ‘Without You’ is the embodiment of Devan’s feelings toward the messages, her ex, and every memory in-between. “We used the song’s lyrical themes to guide the production,” the artist reveals. “The first half of the chorus sounds distorted and angry, then the transition into the second half marks that moment of epiphany – the sounds are softer and rounder, the drums are bouncy and dancey, and the lyrics take on a different meaning even though they don’t change.”
